Lake Guntersville State Park

The area's signature outdoor outing, about 35 minutes away: a good trip on a day off. Some 6,000 acres of woodland on Alabama's largest lake, with a beach complex, fishing, a zipline, a nature center and 36 miles of hiking and biking trails. North Alabama summers are hot and humid, with strong sun on open fields: bring a canopy or other shade, sunscreen and plenty of water.
Afternoon thunderstorms can pop up quickly in summer, and spring and fall mornings can start cool; keep rain gear and a layer in the car.
Turf surfaces get especially hot on sunny afternoons; bring extra water and something to sit on between games.
