Mostly turf: EastSide Centre lists 8 of its 10 baseball/softball fields as fully synthetic turf (Fields 1-4 and 7-10). Fields 5 and 6, the two smallest, are natural grass and dirt with no lights, and the city has approved converting them to turf as well. (10 baseball/softball fields: four lighted turf softball fields (Fields 1-4, 200-225 ft fences) that also take youth baseball with portable mounds, two small grass-and-dirt diamonds (Fields 5 and 6, 200 ft), two high school-size turf baseball fields (Field 7, 320 ft lines and 375 to center; Field 10, 320 and 385) and two multi-use turf fields with 60/90 setups (Field 8, 225/275; Field 9, 250/285) (EastSide Centre).)

The Peoria area's big family outing, about 26 minutes west of the fields: an 1,800-acre zoological park with more than 180 animals native to the region, including bison, black bears, cougars, elk and wolves, along walking trails and a pioneer homestead. Packing notes

Central Illinois summers are hot and humid, and turf heats up in the sun: bring a canopy or other shade, sunscreen and plenty of water.
Spring storms can roll in fast and mornings can start cool; keep rain gear and a warm layer in the car.
Most diamonds are turf, but Fields 5 and 6 are grass and dirt for now, so pack turf shoes and a backup pair until you know your field.
